When: Friday, November 21, 2014
Time: 12:30 - 2 p.m.

Children ages 3-22 are entitled to special education support when they have a qualifying disability that has an adverse educational impact, or to accommodations via a 504 plan when the issues don't require special education support.  Many families struggle to access these services, or receive appropriately individualized support.  Clinical professionals play a key role in helping families request and receive support, and advocate for their children.  This lecture focuses on how to provide effective support and direct families to key resources.

Cheryl Theis, MA, is an Education Advocate and Education Disability Rights Trainer for  at DREDF, with special expertise in navigating the foster and kinship care systems for children with mental health and learning needs.  Cheryl provides specialized training and advocacy support to parents, caregivers, health care providers, therapists, child welfare and dependency court staff, community organizations and education agencies so that children receive effective advocacy and educational support, She also  provides training and policy input at the local, state and national level in educational, community and policy venues to ensure that the rights of children with disabilities to a free appropriate public education are provided in the least restrictive settings based on a child's individual needs.
