Dismantling Barriers to Educational Success created by Race, Poverty and Trauma
Presenters: Dr. Macheo Payne and Christine Stoner-Mertz, LCSW, President and CEO, Lincoln Child Center

Presenters will discuss how early investments on a community level can help to dismantle educational barriers created by poverty, trauma and race. They’ll offer new approaches to long-standing issues, which can improve attendance, restore students’ mental health and create school communities that can thrive. Lincoln’s social impact model for reducing chronic absenteeism and their partnerships with school districts, parents and funders to achieve healthy school environments will be highlighted.
Dr. Macheo Payne is Senior Director of Equity and Educational Initiatives at Lincoln Child Center. Dr. Payne has studied the impact of race on educational opportunities, and is dedicated to helping institutions and individuals adjust their unconscious biases through his work at Lincoln and as a professor. He has worked in the public sector and private nonprofits, providing youth development, educational and mental health services. Dr. Payne is deeply committed to issues of equity, and is helping to develop statewide policies to improve attendance and reduce disproportionate discipline as a member of California’s "Keeping Kids in School and Out of Court" Initiative. Dr. Payne holds a Master’s in Social Work, and a doctorate in Education, and is a professor in the social work department at California State University East Bay.
Christine Stoner-Mertz, LCSW, is President and CEO of Lincoln Child Center. Ms. Stoner-Mertz has over 25 years of experience in youth and family services work, and has served as a consultant to nonprofit providers, the California State Department of Mental Health, County Departments of Mental Health, Social Services and School Districts. With her leadership team at Lincoln, Chris has transformed Lincoln’s service delivery models, creating programs focused on strengthening families in their communities and schools, with a vision for equitable futures for all children.
