Hidden Wounds: Understanding, Assessing, and Treating the Emotional Impact of Learning and Attention Disorders
Speaker: Alan Siegel, PhD
Date: Friday, November 18th, 2016
Time: 12:30 – 2:00 pm
The psychological impact of LD, ADHD and social communication disorders is often underestimated. Early and comprehensive assessment may enhance psychological treatment and ameliorate or prevent more severe and common comorbid disorders such as depression, anxiety, and academic underperformance. Psychotherapists can review strategies to access accommodations, form an effective treatment team and address cultural issues and barriers, and clarify strategies for diagnosis, medication, and psychological treatments.
Alan Siegel, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Berkeley and San Francisco and an Associate Clinical Professor at UC Berkeley, where he supervises graduate students. Dr. Siegel has provided comprehensive assessment of learning, attention, social communication and psychological disorders and directed training programs for mental health professionals for 35 years in a variety of settings. He was the supervising psychologist at the CPMC Child Development Center. He is interested in the psychological impact of LD, ADHD and empowering parents and schools to mobilize resources to assess and treat these issues.
