More than Skin Deep: Understanding Self-Harming Behaviors in Children and Adolescents

Presenter: Kristin Carey, PsyD
When: May 1, 2015 (Friday)
Time: 12:30 - 2 p.m.

A teenager in treatment pulls up her sleeve, revealing cuts she made in her arm the night before. A child in group therapy shares that he burned his skin, intentionally. These children who deliberately hurt themselves are often not suicidal but are attempting to manage overwhelming mental states, such as intense sadness, anxiety, or sense of numbness. Through didactic presentation and discussion, this lecture will address the underlying dynamics of self-injurious behaviors and explore who is most vulnerable to this form of expression. Assessment considerations and treatment approaches will be considered.
