20/20 Vision: What is Concealed?

Learning-related vision problems are very common and are chronically under-diagnosed and under-treated.  This presentation will provide an overview of various common eye conditions in children that can impact learning abilities.  Parents often assume that their child's visual system is being evaluated fully at the pediatrician's office- but frequently this is not the case.  We will discuss the binocular vision screening tools that can be used by lay people to help identify learning-related vision problems. We’ll consider the psychological and psychopharmacological impacts and co-morbidities of visual skills deficiencies on ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc. Three cases will illustrate the diagnosis and treatment of learning-related vision problems.

Jeremy Shumaker graduated from Berkeley Optometry in 2007.  Since graduation he has been working as a developmental optometrist in San Rafael and San Francisco with his partner David Grisham.  He also teaches part time as a clinical instructor at Cal.  Dr. Shumaker is especially interested in harnessing children and adults' inherent neuro-plasticity with vision therapy techniques to improve deficient visual skills including smooth pursuits, eye tracking (saccades), near focusing, gross convergence, binocular eye coordination, depth perception, and other visual perceptual challenges. These conditions negatively impact reading, learning, and athletic performance.   Dr. Shumaker also has unique experience in the fitting of contact lenses for adults and children, Orthokeratology (corneal re-shaping), multifocal contacts, and utilizing these lenses to help control the progression of myopia (near-sightedness) in young people.
