Hidden Wounds: The Emotional Impact of Learning, Attention and Social Communication Disorders

Presenter: Alan Siegel, PhD
When: Friday, March 7, 2014
Time: 12:30 - 2 p.m.

Children, adolescents and adults with learning, attention, and social communication disorders frequently suffer from hidden emotional wounds, linked to a lack of a full understanding of their strengths and challenges, the tyranny of the myth of laziness, parents’ and teachers’ confusion and disappointment, and a lack of educational and psychological support. Comprehensive neuropsychological, academic, and psychological assessment can lead to better prioritized and more nuanced treatment plans, the ability to access crucial accommodations and a more sympathetic understanding on the part of parents, teachers, and mental health practitioners.  Issues covered will include incomplete diagnostic formulations that overlook key issues, acute depression, anxiety and low self-esteem in adolescents with LD and ADHD, late diagnosis of ADHD in bright teens and complex interactions between ADHD and learning disabilities.

Alan Siegel, PhD has over thirty years of experience doing comprehensive evaluations of children and adults as well as psychotherapy.  He has helped students from over 100 different schools and dozens of colleges to obtain accommodations from elementary through graduate school and for professional examinations.  He is Associate Clinical Professor, UC Berkeley, and was the Supervising Psychologist at the Child Development Center at CPMC in San Francisco and Training Director at Berkeley Mental Health.  Dr. Siegel practices in Berkeley and San Francisco.
