Raising a Gender Creative Child

Speaker: Diane Ehrensaft, PhD
Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2015
Time: 6:45-8:15pm

In the twenty-first century gender has transformed from bedrock to moving boulders.  Children are popping up in an ever-expanding rainbow of gender possibilities.  They lead the way, and their parents and other adults follow behind. In this workshop we will look at the need for all of us to re-learn gender as we support all of our children, whether our own or the ones in the community our children live in, to be able to discover “the gender that is me”, which could be a boy, a girl, a boy-girl, a girl-boy, a gender hybrid, a gender fluid, a gender queer child, and so forth.  Dr. Ehrensaft will discuss her work as a gender specialist and consultant to parents who are working to support their children in that journey and then open up the floor for questions, sharing of experiences, and dialogue among the workshop attendees.

Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D. is the Director of Mental Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center, attending psychologist at the CAGC Clinic at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, and associate professor of pediatrics at UCSF.  She is author of Gender Born, Gender Made:  Raising Healthy Gender-Nonconforming Children, and the forthcoming book, The Gender Creative Child.  She is a developmental and clinical psychologist who also has a private practice in Oakland, where she devotes much of her practice to her work as a gender specialist.
