Practicum Training Program
The Ann Martin Center offers a psychodynamically-oriented, year long school-based Practicum Training Program. Practicum students are placed within a 3-5 member therapy team at one of our nine elementary school-based sites in Oakland made up of Ann Martin staff members. The team-based approach incorporates practicum trainees with other school-based clinicians who together provide a range of on-site services on-site (specifically psychological testing and group therapy).
Practicum Training includes weekly seminars for students focusing on milieu based therapy using a psychodynamic framework, group therapy and psychological assessment. We also emphasize practical problem solving and working collaboratively with members of the broader school community, such as teachers, caregivers, school psychologists and staff. We provide one hour of weekly individual supervision, two hours/week of group supervision, weekly team meetings in which administrative support is given, quarterly all school staff meetings focusing on relevant topics, i.e. creating behavior plans for clients at the school level, and testing supervision are part of the training.
Trainees will complete a minimum of 2 psychological test batteries (children and adolescents) which includes administration, scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback to the client's family. In addition, trainees will see 1-5 elementary school children for psychotherapy on-site and co-lead one on-site therapy group at an Oakland public school. Trainees must fulfill all client related responsibilities, meet ethical standards, and attend required seminars sponsored by AMC.
In addition to our school based practicum training, we also offer a year-long Supplemental Practicum Training Program for students who have successfully completed our school based training program. The Supplemental Practicum Program provides an opportunity for students to build on their therapeutic assessment skills using our brief assessment model. In addition, trainees will work with one or two child/ adolescent patients in our outpatient clinic. Didactic training, individual and group supervision are built in to our training model. Professional development is another area of focus in this training track.
