Treating NVLD in Children: Professional Collaborations for Positive Outcomes

This presentation will provide an overview of the authors’ new book, Treating NVLD in Children: Professional Collaborations for Positive Outcomes. The goal is to familiarize the audience with the need to think collaboratively when working with children with Non-verbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD), as their symptomatology can be very diverse and may require the need to involve a variety of professionals over the course of their childhood to early adulthood. Marion Marshall will present an example of such a professional covering the role of an educational therapist. 

Jessica Broitman, PhD is co-editor of Treating NVLD in Children: Professional Collaborations for Positive Outcomes (2013), and also co-author of Learning Disabilities in Children: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice (2011). Dr. Broitman is the President emeritus of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group and Executive Director of its Clinic and Training Center. She frequently lectures on Weiss's Control Mastery Theory worldwide. Currently a psychoanalyst in private practice since 1980, she has worked with families who have learning-disabled children for more than 10 years. She is currently involved in several research projects concerning the treatment and understanding of NVLD and has a special interest in helping professionals and families understand and treat this disorder. 

Jack Davis, PhD is co-editor of Treating NVLD in Children and co-author of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities in Children: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice (2011). He is currently a Professor at California State University, East Bay, and Chair of the Educational Psychology Department, where he teaches and supervises. He received his PhD from the UC Berkeley School Psychology program and is a licensed psychologist. Dr. Davis has a special interest in learning and developmental disorders having been the director of a school and clinic for students with learning disabilities for 13 years, which provided diagnostic and intervention services. His current clinical work is primarily with children and adults with learning disorders. His writing and research interests include articles and book chapters in the areas of mental health consultation, suicide/crisis intervention, and learning disorders. 

Marion Marshall, MS, BCET, FAET, is a multiple award-winning educator with over 34 years of experience teaching in public and independent schools. She is an Associate Professor of Education at Holy Names University in Oakland where she serves as the Coordinator of the graduate-level Educational Therapy Program. Ms. Marshall has been honored with “Teacher of the Year, Resource Specialist” for the State of California, and named a Fellow in Educational Therapy for outstanding contributions to the field. She is currently a Board Member for the Association of Educational Therapists (AET) and her work has been published in the AET Journal.
